SML Raising Awareness of Black Maternal Health

SML Director of Communications | Published on 11/11/2023

On Saturday 11/4/2023, Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Sigma Mu Lambda Chapter, co-organized an event to discuss issues pertaining to black maternal health.

This event held at Buck County Community College and was organized in partnership with the March of Dimes, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Omega Zeta Omega and Phi Beta Omega Chapters. Our very own Brother Dr. Joseph Gobern was a featured panelist.

Maternal mortality is a very important issue in our community, and we are honored to do our part to increase awareness! Maternal mortality applies in cases of livebirth, stillbirth, abortion, and miscarriage. Maternal mortality is the death of a woman during pregnancy or up to one year following the end of pregnancy, regardless of the outcome of the pregnancy. In our catchment area, a large disparity in maternal mortality exists between African American and White women. However, mortality is the most severe outcome; for every woman who dies, there is a higher number of women who experience negative maternity-related health outcomes.

The event was attended by 130 members of the community--six of whom were members of Sigma Mu Lambda Chapter.

The event was organized by the Community Service Committee, led by Brother Kirt Willis.
