Sigma Mu Lambda: A Rising Force in Brotherhood and Scholarship

Chartered on May 19, 2019, Sigma Mu Lambda (SML) has swiftly emerged as one of the fastest-growing alumni chapters in the Eastern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. In just six years, the chapter has built a reputation for excellence, positioning itself as a rising premier chapter within not only the Eastern Region, but the Fraternity as a whole.

With a roster of over 80 active brothers—many reclaimed through dedicated outreach—SML proudly serves the Montgomery and Chester County communities in Pennsylvania. Their commitment to service extends beyond fraternity walls, with ongoing support for national initiatives such as March of Dimes (March for Babies) and the Alzheimer’s Association. Looking ahead, the chapter aspires to award more than $100,000 in scholarships to Black and Brown students pursuing higher education.

On Saturday, October 18th, SML hosted its signature scholarship fundraiser: a Topgolf outing at the King of Prussia location. The event exceeded expectations, selling over 100 tickets and drawing a vibrant crowd of donors, including friends, family, and fellow Divine Nine members.

Guests were welcomed with a continental breakfast and a heartfelt program expressing gratitude to those who contributed to the cause.

Chapter President Brother Kewin Gales emphasized the importance of the event, stating, “Raising scholarship funds for deserving students is critical for the development of future leaders. Our chapter is committed to advancing education by providing much-needed financial assistance during these tough economic times.”

The scholarship initiative is led by The Ithaca 1906 Educational Fund, the official entity responsible for fundraising and distributing scholarships. Brother Ric Ramsey, Chair of the Fund, reflected on the deeper meaning behind the event: “I find no greater joy than to marry the game of golf with the great cause of raising funds for scholars. The irony is that both were once used to disenfranchise our community. We’re doing what we can to help young people who want to go to school but need a little assistance.”

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed laughter, camaraderie, and plenty of photo-worthy moments while indulging in delicious food and amenities—all in support of a transformative mission. Brother David Poindexter, Scholarship Chair, shared his hopes for the future: “We’re aiming to raise and award close to $25,000 in scholarships for the 2026–2027 academic year.”

With unwavering dedication and a growing impact, Sigma Mu Lambda continues to embody the fraternity’s mission of developing leaders, promoting brotherhood, and academic excellence.

Onward and upward.
